Gold medal-winning gymnast Mary Lou Retton, who was hospitalized earlier this fall with a rare form of pneumonia, issued a lengthy statement on her Instagram to update her status.
The iconic United States Olympian, who won gold in the 1984 Summer Olympics, took to social media on Thanksgiving to let people know that she is on the road to recovery at home.
“As we gather to celebrate this Thanksgiving, my heart is overflowing with profound gratitude,” she wrote. “I want to express how truly blessed and thankful I am to be slowly improving and to be home with my girls, especially after my time in the hospital.”
Retton continued, citing that her four daughters have been “a source of strength and inspiration” in her recovery.
She addressed her followers at large, whom she referred to as her “extended family.”
“Your love has been a beacon of hope in my life, she said. “On this day of giving thanks, I am reminded of the preciousness of life, the love that surrounds me, and the resilience of the human spirit.
“Each one of you has played a significant role in my journey, and for that, I am eternally grateful.”
Retton was originally hospitalized in October, and at one point in ICU.
At one point, she was unable to breathe on her own during her fight, her daughter McKenna Kelley posted in October.
But Retton began to recover, and at the end of October, she broke her silence on her health.
“I am overwhelmed with the love and support from the world as I fight,” she wrote then. “I am forever grateful to you all! I’m with family continuing to slowly recover and staying very positive as I know this recovery is a long and slow process.”
Along with her gold medal in 1984, Retton also won two silvers and two bronze medals in the same summer games, with three consecutive American Cup first-place finishes from 1983-85.
