The Marvel Cinematic Universe takes us all over the galaxy, from faraway planets to Jersey City. As a combination spy thriller and superhero drama, Secret Invasion is likely to take us on a real international tour, one that could go intergalactic at any moment. You really never know where Marvel’s characters will pop up next, nor can you ever be certain that the actors in the super suits are where they appear to be. What’s a soundstage, what’s a green screen, and what’s a real cultural landmark in a real city?
If you’re just wondering where Secret Invasion takes place, you’re in luck. The show tells you right away: Episode 1 is set in present-day Moscow — but was the episode actually filmed in Moscow? Or did Secret Invasion’s secret agents never leave Atlanta? Here’s what we know about Secret Invasion’s filming locations.
Filming primarily took place in the UK, specifically in West Yorkshire and London. In West Yorkshire, the series set up shop in Leeds, in Huddersfield, and in Halifax. In fact, the series used the UK to double for Moscow in Episode 1. The big set piece at the end of the episode, where — SPOILER — Gravik detonates dirty bombs in Moscow? That’s actually Halifax’s Piece Hall, and it took the production a week to film (January 24-31, 2022).

Additionally, filming took place at Pinewood Studios just outside London, where Secret Invasion occupied seven of the iconic studio’s sound stages. Overall, filming on Secret Invasion lasted from September 2021 to the end of April 2022.
When it comes to New Skrullos, the Skrulls’ sanctuary inside a long abandoned Russian nuclear power plant, that was most likely constructed on a soundstage at Pinewood. That’s to be expected, as filming at a real abandoned Russian nuclear power plant would be… uh… hard to pull off. I will say, though, that the particular shade of blue seen throughout New Skrullos appears in lots of old Russian architecture — at least that’s what my journey through Google Lens has led me to infer.

As for where Secret Invasion will take us from here, who knows? If the UK can double for Russia, then it seems likely that this adventure could take us all over the globe (and beyond). We do know that London will appear on the show, as a scene set in London’s Berners Tavern between Fury and James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) was spotted in various trailers for the series.
New episodes of Secret Invasion premiere on Wednesdays on Disney+.
