Martha Stewart appeared slightly uncomfortable when Drew Barrymore started petting her back on this morning’s episode of the latter’s daytime talk show.
The two women were discussing Stewart’s 100th cookbook when Barrymore asked what makes her guest feel “soft and gooey” inside.
“What makes me soft and gooey? Soft and gooey treatment,” Stewart replied, to which Barrymore clarified, “When you’re treated like a lady.”
Barrymore then began stroking Stewart’s back, but the author quickly pushed her away and said, “You’re the wrong gender.”
The talk show host fell back onto the couch, telling her guest, “I know. Although the way it’s going with men, though, Martha, I’m not so sure anymore.”
Barrymore’s intimate interview style has been equally praised and criticized over the years. Just last year, she came under fire for caressing Oprah Winfrey‘s arm during a December 2023 Drew Barrymore Show interview.
“Drew, everyone doesn’t want their hands held boo,” one fan commented under a video posted to Instagram, while another added, “She’s really creeping me out now. It’s just [too] weird.”
The actress addressed the criticism during her Season 5 premiere in September, telling the audience how Winfrey actually reacted following the interview.

“[Winfrey] said, like, ‘I wish Stedman would touch me like that.’ She was so nice about it. And if a guest starts telling me that [they’re bothered], I will back off,” Barrymore explained, while Winfrey’s BFF Gayle King added, “It didn’t bother her.”
According to Barrymore, she was going to try harder to keep her hands to herself this season.
“It’s so funny because consistently over the last five years, it’s that I’m too touchy and too close to people, which is so embarrassing,” she said, before adding, “I don’t know if I can break the habit, either. So I hear you and I’ll do my best, but it is so hard.”
The Drew Barrymore Show airs on weekdays on CBS. You can check the website for local airtimes.
