NextImg:Marlins rookie Eury Perez is a must-add in fantasy baseball after strong debut

When Major League Baseball amended its rules to incentivize teams to call upon their younger players earlier, the fantasy baseball community salivated over the possibilities.

Anyone who has played the fantasy game knows how much we love our shiny, new toys, and when a top prospect is called up, we sprint to our waiver wire, fists filled with FAAB dollars, ready to strike.

This season, we have seen more rookies in just the first month than we’ve seen in the three years prior combined, and if you still own that top waiver priority, there is one more pitcher who is a must-grab this weekend.

Eury Perez made his debut for the Marlins on Friday night, going 4 ²/₃ innings for a no-decision in a loss to the Reds.

He struck out seven while giving up two earned runs on four hits, including two homers, and two walks, but regardless, you are going to want to make him your top waiver wire priority.

We have already witnessed the prowess of young hurlers Hunter Brown, Grayson Rodriguez, Bryce Miller, Taj Bradley and Tanner Bibee, and fantasy managers who failed to invest early are feeling the pangs after being forced to rely on old, banged-up veterans such as Lance Lynn and Jack Flaherty.

Yes, some of these crafty veterans could level off and provide you with decent numbers moving forward, but none of them have the kind of upside a rookie like Perez can offer.

Perez, a 20-year-old 6-foot-8 right-hander, earned his promotion from Double-A Pensacola after posting a 2.32 ERA with a 42-9 K-BB rate over just 31 innings (six starts) and is expected to be given every opportunity possible to stay in the big leagues.

Expectations are already through the roof, as many say he’s the most exciting pitching prospect since the late Jose Fernandez made his Marlins debut in 2013.

Perez has a fantastic four-pitch arsenal with a fastball that consistently sits in the upper-90s and routinely touches triple-digits.

His changeup looks just like his fastball until it drops vertically once it reaches the plate, and he routinely keeps hitters off-balance by mixing in both his slider and curveball.

His command is a rarity among young pitchers.

His first test came against the soft-hitting Reds, but you still want to make the move.

The Marlins’ upcoming schedule is littered with teams such as the Rockies, Athletics and Royals, so he’s not exactly being thrown to the wolves.

Generational talents are few and far between, so don’t miss out. Your fantasy rotation needs Eury Perez.
