It doesn’t take much to help Mark Consuelos fall asleep. On this morning’s episode of Live with Kelly and Mark, he recalled the time he took a power nap on executive producer Michael Gelman’s “luxurious” bathmat during a fancy dinner party.
While discussing Consuelos’ daily nap habits — appropriately dubbed “sleep one” and “sleep two” — he was reminded of the time he and Kelly Ripa had dinner at Gelman’s house about 15 years ago.
According to the actor, he was working day and night in Toronto during the week and would fly home on the weekends to see his family. This one time, however, they had plans to go to the Gelmans’ for dinner — where they were served “beautiful wine” and “gourmet” food.
After they were a few bottles into dinner, Consuelos remembered “sleep one” creeping in on him. However, he put it off — only to find that “sleep two” would soon be piling itself on “sleep one.”
“So I excuse myself and I go to the bathroom to splash a little water on my face. And I’m drying off my hands and I look to my right. And there’s a beautiful, brand new bathmat,” he explained. “Sleep two says to Mark, ‘Try it out.’ I lay on that thing just for a second. I’m like, ‘Wow.’ And I’m rubbing it like this.”
Back at the dinner table, Ripa said everyone else was “oblivious” to the fact that her husband had been missing for 45 minutes, while she had been “acutely aware” of his absence. Since the powder room was located next door to Gelman’s baby’s room, it wasn’t until she heard the “dulcet tones of Mark’s snoring” picked up through the baby monitor that she knew something was wrong.
“So I excuse myself. ‘Pardon me, I’ll be right back,'” she said. “And I go to enter the bathroom but of course he’s locked the door. So now I’m knocking.”
When Consuelos failed to wake up to her loud knocks, she attempted to subtly get Gelman’s attention from across the dinner table to help her pick the lock. Eventually, she retrieved a hairpin from his wife and broke into the bathroom, where she found Consuelos sleeping on the floor “like a baby.”
“I had the best sleep I’ve had in years,” Consuelos joked, before turning to Gelman and asking, “When can I come over for dinner again?”
