A deranged man walked up to a 72-year-old Asian woman and slugged her in the face on a Manhattan street Wednesday in what cops are investigating as a potential hate crime.
The attack took place as the woman was walking near Delancey and Allen Street in the Lower East Side at around 1 p.m., according to police.
The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
Raoul Hyacianthe was arrested and charged with assault as a hate crime. The 44-year-old suspect apparently exchanged no words with the victim before he allegedly punched her.
Hyacianthe has a lengthy rap sheet including arrests for robbery, criminal mischief, menacing and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Hate crimes against Asian Americans have increased in New York City and across the country following the onslaught of the coronavirus pandemic.
