Police are probing the death of a Bronx man who head- butted an EMT while being treated, and later died, authorities said.
The bizarre episode unfolded Friday at around 10:20 a.m. when officers responded to a call for help from medics inside the man’s Prospect Avenue apartment, in the Mott Haven section.
The first responders had been called to the 49-year-old’s home to help him with injuries related to a prior motorcycle accident, the NYPD said. The man then became “combative,” assaulting a 33-year-old medic after he was placed inside an ambulance, authorities said.
By the time the cops arrived to the man’s home, EMS had already taken the man to Lincoln Hospital with a head injury, authorities said.
He was taken into police custody at the hospital without incident, authorities said. He died in the hospital.
The injured EMT, who is a member of the FDNY, was treated at Lincoln Hospital and released, an FDNY spokesman said.
The death is being investigated by the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division, an NYPD spokesman said.
The identity of the 49-year-old is being withheld pending family notification.
It’s the latest attack on the city’s first responders. In July, a medic was stabbed by a deranged patient in her ambulance in Manhattan.
In September 2022, veteran medic Alison Russo, 61, was murdered in a random stabbing attack outside her Astoria stationhouse.
