After nearly 19 years, Malcolm in the Middle is returning to screens with a revival. The beloved Emmy Award-winning show’s chaos between family members has held a special place in sitcom fans’ hearts, but they may notice something different about one of the characters.

According to The BBC, Little Brother Dewey (previously played by Erik Per Sullivan) will not return for the revival, and Caleb Ellsworth-Clark will be recast in the role instead.

Thankfully, the rest of the core cast members will return, including Jane Kaczmarek, Bryan Cranston, Christopher Masterson, Justin Berfield and of course the show’s star, Frankie Muniz.

BBC spoke with Sullivan’s television mom, Kaczmarek, who explained further why he wouldn’t be returning.

“He did Malcolm for seven years. He started at seven and ended at 14,” she said. “He wasn’t interested in acting, at all.”

She acknowledged his lack of motivation to pursue acting as a career.

“I admire it because so many people think being in show business is the greatest thing in the world. It’s not for everyone,” she said, praising her former TV son’s willingness to pursue his passion outside Hollywood.

Along with much of the original cast, new stars are also joining the show. Deadline reports that Kiana Madeira, best known for her role in Fear Street, will portray Malcolm’s opinionated girlfriend, while Keeley Karsten has been cast as Malcolm’s daughter, a character expected to play a significant role in the series’ storyline.

Additionally, Anthony Timpano will play Jamie and Vaughan Murray will portray the youngest sibling, Kelly.

Variety reports that the plot of the revival is driven by Malcolm’s parents’ 40th wedding anniversary party, which he is forced to attend and bring his new family into the mess.

There is no release date for the series at this time, but according to 9Meters, it is on track for a premiere at the end of 2025.
