A somber week surrounding the 149th Kentucky Derby and Churchill Downs ended with Mage winning the main race Saturday evening.
Mage was the unofficial winner at 2:01.57, with Two Phil’s and Angel of Empire coming in at second and third.
Angel of Empire and Tapit Trice entered the race with two of the best odds, respectively, among the horses competing, per an NBC graphic shown in the minutes leading up to the event.
Even with the result, the day — and week — was defined by seven horses dying, including two on Saturday, ahead of the event.
There were 150,335 spectators in attendance at Churchill Downs, according to the NBC broadcast.
The day started with favorite Forte getting scratched due to a hoof bruise, taking the 9-to-2 odds and shattering them — along with the hope for Queens native Mike Repole to win his first Kentucky Derby trophy.
“Their vets and our vets said it was a hoof bruise,” Repole said in an interview earlier in the day. “We took X-rays, he’s fine. He probably just needs a couple more days.”
Forte’s scratch dropped the field to 18 horses, and he was the fifth horse to be scratched ahead of the event.
Practical Move, Continuar, Skinner and Lord Miles were the other horses scratched ahead of the event.
Mage’s victory comes a year after Rich Strike won the 148th edition of the event despite 80/1 odds and not even being in the event until the day before.
