NextImg:Luka Doncic appears slimmed down after disastrous Mavericks season

Luka Doncic appears to have shed some weight.

Doncic posed for an Instagram Story with soccer player Nikola Jovicevic looking noticeably slimmer as the Dallas Mavericks superstar recuperates from a disastrous 2022-23 season.

Doncic’s conditioning has plagued him throughout his NBA career, especially when he admitted to being “not in the best shape” when the league returned to action after the COVID-19 shutdown in 2020.

In April, after Dallas’ disappointing end to the year, basketball legend Reggie Miller ripped the 24-year-old for his perceived lack of endurance.

“Luka’s got to get in better shape,” Miller said. “They’ve got to run more, and I think they did that when Luka was out and Kyrie was at the helm because they’re much better when they play faster. That’s how Jason Kidd wants to coach. He wants them to play faster, but when Luka’s in there, they can’t play fast.

“To me, if he’s in better shape and they can play fast, that puts more pressure on the opposing team.”

Soon after the season, Doncic posted a video to social media of him running stairs, perhaps indicating that he was taking his offseason workouts a bit more seriously this offseason.

After acquiring Kyrie Irving near the trade deadline in February, the Mavericks stunningly went 9-18 to finish the season, missed the playoffs and tanked at the end of the season so blatantly that the NBA issued a $750,000 fine.

Dallas finished 38-44 as the 11th seed, short of the NBA Play-In Tournament.

On a personal stat level, though, Doncic finished the year with a career-best 32.4 points per game and was named an All-Star for the fourth consecutive season.

It remains to be seen if Irving will rejoin a transformed Doncic in Dallas again, as he’s set to become an unrestricted free agent.
