NextImg:Love Mary Elizabeth Winstead As Hera on ‘Ahsoka’? Here’s Which Mary Elizabeth Winstead Movies To Watch Next

Where to Stream:

Star Wars: Ahsoka

Powered by Reelgood

The show may be called Ahsoka, but there’s one cast member who’s stealing the show: General Hera Syndulla, a Twi’lek fighter pilot played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The role brings her into the Star Wars universe, a franchise that has long been home to Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s husband Ewan McGregor. And it’s hard to think of a role more perfect for Winstead, a character actor with major movie star charisma and a whole lot of genre cred. But playing a beloved character like Hera is a big deal, and it’s one that will take Winstead’s profile higher than it’s ever soared before.

That’s saying something because Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s movies range from cult classics and blockbusters over nearly 20 years. From action thrillers to teenage horror movies to major superhero franchises, Winstead has proven time and time again that she has the range. So if the Winstead that you see in Ahsoka feels new to you, that’s because Winstead has a knack for totally disappearing into roles. I mean, she played assassins with polar opposite dispositions in Birds of Prey and Kate, back to back. She’s got the range.

Below you’ll find a list, in chronological order, of 10 Mary Elizabeth Winstead movies that show off what Star Wars’ newest star is capable of.

  1. SKY HIGH, Malika/Khadijah, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, 2005, (c) Buena Vista/courtesy Everett Collection

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is no stranger to playing superheroes and it’s been that way from pretty much the start of her career. She actually had a significant role in the now-classic Disney film Sky High — and we’re not giving away her character’s big twist.

  2. FINAL DESTINATION 3, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, 2006, (c) New Line/courtesy Everett Collection

Winstead’s also a certified scream queen, thanks in part to her lead role in Final Destination 3. Original Final Destination director (and X-Files alum) James Wong came back to helm this one and he gave us a rollercoaster scene you won’t soon forget.

  3. LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, 2007. TM & Copyright ©20th Century Fox. All rights reserved./courtesy Everett Collection

Foreshadowing the badass action star that she’d ultimately become, Winstead joined the iconic Die Hard franchise for its fourth installment. Winstead played Bruce Willis’ now all-grown-up daughter, and she probably learned a thing or two from her movie dad about playing it tough onscreen.

  4. SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, 2010. ©Universal/courtesy Everett Collection

Winstead leveled up with the release of Edgar Wright’s cult classic Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. The film, a hyperactive mashup of comic book and video game tropes filtered through Canadian indie rock angst, gave Winstead her most iconic role to date: Ramona Flowers, the elusive delivery girl with a list of chaotic exes and one huge hammer.

John Carpenter’s creepy classic got a 21st=century update with Winstead in the lead role. This movie allowed the former Ramona to trade her mallet for a flamethrower and get in touch with her inner Ripley.

  6. Mary Elizabeth Winstead in Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter

Remember that weird period in pop culture when mashing up pre-20th century protagonists (both real and fictional) with monsters was all the rage? After Pride & Prejudice & Zombies naturally came Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter — and Winstead got to play a young Mary Todd Lincoln.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead jumped into another franchise with 10 Cloverfield Lane, the follow-up to — and stylistic departure from — the found-footage franchise starter. This movie pits Winstead against John Goodman while trapped in a cellar, with Winstead desperately trying to find out if the world above is as desolate as she’s been led to believe.

Winstead teamed up with not one, but two Will Smiths in this sci-fi thriller from director Ang Lee. After playing a prisoner, First Lady, scientist, final girl, and super-powered teen, Winstead got to show that she’s made of sterner stuff by playing a Navy vet tasked with tracking down Will Smith’s de-aged clone.

  9. BIRDS OF PREY, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress

As Helena Bertinelli, a socially awkward killing machine with a thirst for vengeance (with a splash of justice), Mary Elizabeth Winstead got to return to her superhero movie roots. This time, though, she got to bring a major DC Comics hero to life alongside a killer team of tough-as-nails women. Plus, she got to work side-by-side with her husband Ewan McGregor again.

  10. KATE (2021),Mary Elizabeth Winstead ("Kate")

It all leads to Kate. After well over a decade sharing the spotlight or playing backup to action heroes, Winstead finally gets an old school shoot’em up courtesy of Netflix simply titled Kate. This is Winstead unleashed and a far cry from the reserved, compassionate general she now plays in Ahsoka.
