NextImg:Louisville police to investigate if protocols were followed during Scottie Scheffler arrest

The Louisville Police Department is looking into its protocols after the arrest of golf star Scottie Scheffler on Friday, Mayor Craig Greenberg announced.

“I think that’s critically important that we do that, not just in high-profile events like [those that] took place on Friday, but on a regular basis,” Greenberg said, per the Louisville Courier-Journal. “And if policies are not being followed, there will be transparency about that. There will be action taken.”

Greenberg, who spoke during a press conference on Tuesday addressing the incident, said he had specific questions about the fact that there was no body-cam footage of the scene that led to Scheffler, the No. 1 golfer in the world, being arrested ahead of the second round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club.

“From my understanding, based on the facts I am aware of right now, I understand why body cam may not have been turned on at the initial contact between Officer (Bryan) Gillis and Mr. Scheffler,” he said. “I still have questions about why it was not on during Mr. Scheffler’s arrest.”

Scheffler was arrested in the early morning hours on Friday by Detective Bryan Gillis after allegedly refusing to follow traffic laws outside the golf course, where a fatal car accident had occurred earlier that day.

He was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals and eventually released in time for his tee time just after 10 a.m.

Scheffler shot 5-under 66 on Friday, putting him just three shots off the lead. After struggling on Saturday, Scheffler bounced back on Sunday to finish tied for eight, ending his shot at the Grand Slam.

“First of all, my sympathies go out to the family of Mr. Mills,’’ Scheffler said during a post-round press conference on Friday. “I can’t imagine what they’re going through this morning. I can’t imagine what they’re going through. My heart … I feel for them. I’m sorry.

“My situation will get handled. It was just a huge misunderstanding that’ll get resolved I think fairly quickly,” Scheffler added. “I was driving in this morning, trying to get to my warm-up time and get ready for the round of golf. I didn’t really have an understanding of what had transpired [with the fatal accident].”

Scheffler’s arraignment was postponed from Tuesday until June 3, his attorney, Steve Romines, told ESPN.

No Laying Up reported that the charges are expected to be dropped.
