NextImg:Louisville basketball star Hailey Van Lith enters transfer portal

Hailey Van Lith will be taking her talents out of Louisville.

The college sports site On3.com first reported that Van Lith, one of the biggest stars in women’s college basketball, has entered the transfer portal.

Women’s basketball outlet The Next Hoops added that the 21-year-old Van Lith “has entered as a graduate student and has asked not to be contacted.”

Van Lith averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game this season, and has made the All-ACC team the past two years.

Louisville made it to the Elite Eight this year, losing to Caitlin Clark’s Iowa team.

Last year, with Van Lith as the team’s leading scorer, Louisville made the Final Four before falling to eventual champion South Carolina.

As is the case with all star college athletes now, Van Lith’s decision for what comes next will likely come down to a combination of the likelihood of competing for a championship, NIL opportunities — and possibly the right graduate program.

On3 ranked Van Lith as the seventh in the nation in women’s basketball NIL potential.

“Hailey Van Lith has established herself as a star in NIL over the last 21 months,” analyst Pete Nakos said.

“She’s carefully crafted her brand, with her most noteworthy deals so far easily being adidas and Dick’s Sporting Goods. It will be interesting to watch if her partnership with the sportswear brand makes any impact on where she decides to transfer. Louisville was an adidas school.”

In the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Van Lith had a tense moment with Texas guard Sonya Morris in the handshake line.

Later, Van Lith would say that the incident “wasn’t a big deal.”

“I mean that happens in the NBA game every single day,” she said before Louisville faced Ole Miss in the Sweet Sixteen.

“Just because it was women’s basketball, they’re going to drag it out and it’s a whole deal. But, you know, it really wasn’t a big deal and people are trying to stretch.”
