A 28-year-old Louisiana woman and her mother were arrested this week after authorities learned that she fraudulently enrolled in a local high school by posing as a teenager.
Martha Jessenia Gutierrez-Serrano and her mother, Marta Elizeth Serrano-Alvarado, 46, of Boutte, were taken into custody and charged with injuring public records on Tuesday, the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
“On Monday, May 29…detectives were notified by officials with the St. Charles Parish Public Schools of a possible adult attending Hahnville High School…during the 2022-2023 school year,” the official statement read.
The police subsequently learned that Serrano-Alvarado had been enrolling her daughter at the school as a 17-year-old using a fake passport and birth certificate.
If found guilty of the charges, Serrano-Alvarado and Gutierrez-Serrano each face up to five years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines, the Kansas City Star reported.
The sheriff’s office did not disclose how long Gutierrez-Serrano had been at Hahnville, or what grade she was registered in.
Hahnville High School is located about 25 miles outside of New Orleans, and serves 1,500 students in grades nine through 12, according to its website.
