Lizzo is just like everyone else.
The “About Damn Time” singer, 34, recreated Ariana DeBose’s viral 2023 BAFTA Awards rap during her Amsterdam concert on Thursday.
While surrounded by her dancers, Lizzo told her fans to “shake it off” before giving a quick little shimmy and adding, “Angela Bassett did the thing, shake it off.”
The moment, which was captured in a TikTok video, had the audience cheering and laughing.
Over the weekend, DeBose became a meme after she performed a cover of Eurythmics’ “Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves” and Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family” at the 2023 BAFTAs.
The “West Side Story” star, 32, also included her own “cringe” rap where she name-dropped all of the female nominees from the UK awards show.
“Angela Bassett did the thing, Viola Davis my ‘Woman King,’ Blanchett Cate you’re a genius, Jamie Lee you are all of us,” she sang as the camera panned to each actress in the room.
The rap wasn’t well received and after intense internet criticism, DeBose deleted her Twitter account. However, she did like and commented on an Instagram post that assembled several of the top memes of her song, gushing, “Honestly I love this.”
She also shared a cryptic quote on her Instagram Stories as an apparent response to her haters.
“Babygirl [sic], in a world full of choices, choose yourself,” read the message, which was originally shared by the @BossBabeCorner account.
Despite DeBose poking fun at herself on social media, BAFTA showrunner Nick Bullen slammed those who criticized her.
“The songs she was singing are very familiar songs, the room was clapping, and people were sort of dancing to the music,” Bullen said to Variety. “That rap section in the middle, mentioning the women in the room, was because it’s been a great year for women in film, and we wanted to celebrate that.”
