Live with Kelly and Mark was derailed this morning as Kelly Ripa took extra long to sift through her notes, prompting her co-host/husband Mark Consuelos to fill the awkward silence with nothing but his snores.
During the hit daytime talk show’s opening segment, Ripa explained a recent study that claims “falling asleep too quickly can be a symptom of a larger problem,” before turning to Consuelos and expressing her concerns over his sleep habits.
“Last night I watched you fall asleep at dinner at least three to eight times,” she joked. “You were nodding off, for sure.”
Ripa added, “They’re saying that it should take about 15 to 20 minutes for a healthy person to fall asleep. I think it takes you between 15 and 20 seconds.”
The Riverdale alum then asked his wife what the condition is and why he should be concerned — but was met with silence as she flipped through the article searching for the answer.
“The condition is … Turn the page, says [Michael] Gelman,” she said, referring to the show’s executive producer, who instructed her from offstage.
As Ripa continued to sift through the article, Consuelos playfully put his head down and began to snore — and after 10 long seconds, Ripa finally gave up on her quest to find the answer.
“You know what? You gotta talk to people because when they highlight everything, it’s really like highlighting nothing,” she told Gelman, who later explained that the condition is called “sleep latency.”
He continued, “It could be that you’re overtired — sleep deprived — that’s one of the main things. But it could be a bunch of other things.”
Consuelos then went on to talk about his sleep tracker, which he thinks “lies” to him by telling him he’s asleep when he’s actually awake.
“Mark thinks he’s awake constantly. He’s never awake!” Ripa declared to the audience. “He’s like, ‘This ring told me I slept 12 hours.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, that seems about right.’ And he’s like, ‘No, I was up all night.’ And I go, ‘No, I was next to you listening to you snore.’”
Live with Kelly and Mark airs on weekdays at 9/8c on ABC.
