Mark Consuelos kept it real with his dating advice on Thursday’s Live with Kelly and Mark after Kelly Ripa brought up the trending “6-6-6 dating rule.”

Ripa teased, “Now, imagine my surprise. I always thought that the 6-6-6 dating rule was you check behind your partner’s ear, and if there’s no 6-6-6, you can date them!”

She then described the new rule as pursuing “men who are 6 feet tall, have 6-pack abs, and make over six figures.”

Consuelos deadpanned, “Good luck. That’s like 0.01% of the population.”

Ripa added, “They’re saying these dating apps have made it impossible, really impossible, because you’re probably going to wind up with a pair of 2’s… The picture may be 6-6-6, the reality is a 1.5, 2, 0.5…”

While she read that “experts recommend that daters should be more selective when deciding what apps to use and who to choose, but being too picky can backfire.”

Consuelos then issued his own two cents, likening dating to “when you go fishing.”

“When you go fishing, you don’t go fishing for a big swordfish… [or] a great white shark with a little bobber and a worm,” he explained. “You gotta understand what tackle you’re fishing with to catch the fish that you’re going to get.”

After Consuelos earned a round of applause for his sage statement, he clarified that he was “not saying [to] lower your expectations,” but noted that those dating should “be realistic.”

Ripa replied, “No, I think what he’s saying is we are attracting the 2, the 1.5, and the 0..05? That’s the tackle we’re fishing with?”

Consuelos redeemed himself, as he remarked that he “landed a mermaid.” However, he quickly turned the tables on Ripa.

“But what happens to the sailor is the mermaid draws him into the water and drowns him at the bottom of the sea,” he joked.
