Mark Consuelos shared some rather scrappy stories from his childhood on this morning’s episode of Live with Kelly and Mark.

After his wife and co-host Kelly Ripa mourned the loss of Fruit Stripes gum, Consuelos was reminded of Big League Chew, the shredded gum created to resemble chewing tobacco commonly used by baseball players.

“We just wanted to be those guys,” he reminisced.

He then recalled a time playing baseball with one of his friends growing up, when “a college guy” who happened to have “the real stuff” joined to work out with them.

“And so we tried it,” Consuelos said. “I go, ‘Is this strong?’ And he goes, ‘It’ll make you slap your grandma!'”

Reflecting on the experience trying chewing tobacco for the very first time, he revealed that he “did not make it home.”

“I threw up,” he added. “I had to go to my friend’s house and get the sweats down.”

Consuelos, who said he was 11 or 12 at the time of the incident, added, “I did crazy stuff! I was fascinated with guys that smoked pipes.”

Noting that “there’s nothing like the smell” of tobacco, he imparted another story of his youth that took the cake, when he went on a field trip to Cahokia Mounds while he was living in Illinois.

“And it was this Indian civilization that was there,” he said. “And we got to visit it, and they had museums.”

Sharing that they sold clay pipes at the Cahokia Mounds, Consuelos disclosed that he purchased one with his “me money.”

“I brought it home, I hid it in the garage,” he explained. “I must have been 10 at the time.”

However, being only ten years old, Consuelos struggled locating any tobacco leaves, so he improvised.

“So I found leaves,” he said. “There were leaves out in the yard. Just dry leaves, it was fall. I tried them.”

Ripa asked, “How’d it go?”

Consuelos conceded that the experience was “not great,” but highlighted that he was “adventurous.”

“I got into all kinds of trouble,” he admitted.
