NextImg:Lions vs. Packers prediction: NFL Thanksgiving odds, picks, player props

The NFC North has been the Lions’ world, and the Packers, Vikings and Bears are just simply living in it.

Detroit is hopscotching its way into the playoffs for the first time in seven seasons through the hard-nosed culture coach Dan Campbell poured his soul into building.

Aside from the feel-good narrative, there is a lot to love about the Lions.

They rank No. 4 overall in total DVOA and yards per play (5.9) heading into Thanksgiving Day’s matinee against Green Bay.

Jared Goff’s revival has been reviving to this offense, but he’s also been girdled with competent weapons who have come through when needed.

One of them has been David Montgomery, who many thought would have been on the regression slope after leaving Chicago.

His yardage output has been sliding downward since hitting a career-high 1,070 scrimmage total in 2020.

The five-year veteran back is on pace to just pass that in 2023, despite missing two games to a rib injury.

Montgomery is collecting 82.4 yards, but also doing so while playing a 55.7 percent snap share alongside Jahmyr Gibbs, who’s work in the passing game has propelled him to triple-digit yardage totals in three of the past four weeks.

This tandem has been a fine-tuned machine for Campbell.

It’s raking in 136.6 yards, which places them as the NFL’s sixth-most efficient.

The Lions know their strengths, too.

They run a top-five average of 30.4 rushing plays per game.

Opportunities for Montgomery should continue against Green Bay’s front that gives up 134.7 yards on the ground..

Montgomery especially thrives in the red zone. He has 30 touches there this season — eight of which were goal line carries.

This can be attributed to why he has been held scoreless only once through seven games.

Three of his eight scores were against the Packers back in Week 3 — a night he posted his season-high of 121 yards.

The market seems to be caught in the weeds on the role disparity between him and Gibbs.

Look for Montgomery’s prominence to gobble up a full plate of ground work Thursday.

The play: Montgomery Over 67.5 rushing yards.
