The 2023 season will be veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater’s final one in the NFL.

The 31-year-old Bridgewater, who dealt with serious injuries early in his career, is currently Jared Goff’s backup with the Lions.

He told the Detroit Free Press that he plans to coach high school football upon retirement.

“Everything happens for a reason,” Bridgewater told the newspaper. “Injuries, highs, lows, the success, the failures. It all, it builds character, and that’s what it did for me.

“I never look like, ‘Oh man, what if?’ Nah. Whatever was meant for me, it played out the exact way it was meant. And I’m still with that mindset every day, and I’m just really appreciative that I’m in Year 10.”

Bridgewater was the 32nd overall pick by the Vikings out of Louisville in 2014.

In 2015, he made the lone Pro Bowl appearance of his career after leading Minnesota to an 11-5 record in his second NFL season.

His career was interrupted by a non-contact ACL tear during training camp in 2016, and he signed with the Jets after missing most of the next two seasons due to the injury.

He never played a game for the Jets, however.

Bridgewater was traded to the Saints to be Drew Brees’ backup that August after losing the starting job to first-round pick Sam Darnold in training camp.

Bridgewater made 35 starts over the next four seasons for the Saints, the Panthers and the Broncos.

He appeared in five games for the Dolphins in 2022 before signing as a free agent with the Lions in August.

Bridgewater took the field for the Lions in garbage time during a 42-24 win over the Panthers in Week 5, his only appearance so far this season.
