NextImg:Lions’ Jared Goff turns in brutal first half on Thanksgiving as shaky play continues

If Jared Goff was hoping for a Happy Thanksgiving following a brutal performance – well the Lion quarterback is not off to a good start.

The 29-year-old Goff, after throwing three interceptions in a comeback win against the Bears last week, turned in a brutal first half against the Packers on Thursday by losing two fumbles that left the Lions trailing 23-6 at the break.

The first, after getting sacked by Rashan Gary,  was picked up by Green Bay’s Jonathan Owens and returned 27 yards for a touchdown that pushed the Packers’ advantage to 20-6 with 56 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

On Detriots’ next possession, Goff scrambled for two yards up the middle but Green Bay’s Kark Brooks forced the ball to the ground and recovered it at the Lions’ 23-yard line.

Thankfully for Detriot, its defense held firm and stopped AJ Dillion short on fourth and 1 from the 14.

The fumbles were just part of Goff’s rough first half in which he threw for 100 yards and a touchdown but missed a number of open receivers.

“He’s just off,” Fox analyst Greg Olsen said after Goff missed a wide open Sam LaPorta on a throw.

The Lions, 8-2, can only hope Goff and their team can overcome the mistakes like they did against the Bears a week ago when they overcame a 26-14 in the final four minutes.

He had been hoping to put that performance behind him this week.

“It does help to be able to play so quickly now and be able to hopefully go into the weekend with, obviously a win, but a good taste in your mouth for how you played as well,” Goff said, via Justin Rogers of the Detroit News. “So yeah, I’d love to come out this week and play well and get a W and be able to put that one behind me.”

Goff was able to lead a touchdown drive on the Lions’ opening possession of the second half to start them on the comeback trail and trim the deficit to 23-14.
