The Jeff Okudah era in Detroit is over after just three years.
The Lions traded their former No. 3 overall pick to the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday for a fifth-round selection in this year’s draft, according to multiple reports.
The 24-year-old cornerback was selected by Detroit in the 2020 NFL Draft, one pick ahead of All-Pro Giants tackle Andrew Thomas and three picks ahead of Chargers franchise quarterback Justin Herbert.
He struggled in his first two seasons, and while he showed signs of improvement in 2022, Okudah still posted a PFF coverage grade of just 54.4 in his third pro season.
It was a former Lions regime that selected Okudah, and new general manager Brad Holmes clearly felt the need to cut bait on a player he did not personally invest in.
The Falcons, meanwhile, now have a second corner to pair with Pro Bowler A.J. Terrell, as they continue to load up in the 2023 offseason.
Atlanta has spent over $130 million in cash during this free agency period, per Spotrac – the most in the league by a wide margin.
In addition to Okudah, they have acquired players such as safety Jessie Bates, defensive lineman David Onyemata, cornerback Mike Hughes and quarterback Taylor Heinecke, while also extending offensive tackle Kaleb McGary.
The Lions signed cornerback Cameron Sutton in the offseason, now ostensibly to replace Okudah, and could theoretically be in the market for a cornerback in the 2023 NFL Draft.
