Soccer fans around the world may be holding their breath after Lionel Messi exited early in Wednesday night’s 4-0 Inter Miami victory over Toronto FC.
The superstar came off the field in the 37th minute of the game just moments after Jordi Alba had also left the game.
There didn’t appear to be a specific play in which Messi or Alba appeared to injure themselves.
Nevertheless, both clearly looked as though something had been bothering them as they left the field.
“It wasn’t part of the plan,” Miami coach Tata Martino said, according to Franco Panizo. “I wouldn’t say it was anything new or more serious than what was there before. I don’t think there are any muscular injuries and we will take it day by day.”
Both players already have been ruled out of Sunday’s game against Orlando and will undergo further testing.
Messi still could be available for next week’s U.S. Open Cup Final against the Houston Dynamo.
Before coming out of the match, Messi had been seen trying to stretch out his leg while the play was going on.
Eventually, he relinquished the captain’s armband and headed off the field.
Messi already had missed two games before Wednesday night — one for Inter Miami and the other for the Argentinian national team. He did not play due to fatigue for both games.
Inter Miami has a busy schedule coming up and Wednesday was just the first of a 17-day span that sees Miami play six games in that time period.
They will have Orlando on Sunday and then the U.S. Open Cup final on Wednesday.
Followed by MLS regular season matches Sept. 30, Oct. 4 and Oct. 7.
Miami also finds itself in the thick of the playoff hunt sitting only five points back of DC United for the final postseason spot.
