Lexi Thompson is proving she belongs — and then some.
Thompson put herself in position to make the cut at the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas.
The 28-year-old finished Friday’s second round at 2-under, one shot outside the projected cutline.
She began her day firing at 3-under through the first 14 holes.
With some golfers yet to tee off, the second round may not be done until Saturday.
Thompson opened with a 2-over 73 in the first round, which she finished on Friday morning, then opened her second round with a bogey.
Thompson — starting on the back nine Friday — then birdied five of her next 10 holes to storm into the mix for the weekend.
“I played decent, I had one bad hole and a few iffy shots. But it’s golf; it was kind of expected,” Thompson, who double-bogeyed No. 7 on Thursday, said after the first round.
Thompson is the seventh woman to play on the PGA Tour, a sponsor exemption that only came together in the last two weeks.
On the LPGA Tour, she has gone more than four years since her last victory.
“I don’t really see it as a challenge,” Thompson said in the days before the tournament. “Coming into a PGA Tour event, being a woman, is a challenge. I just got to play within myself. I know my game. Don’t try to push anything. … Try my best on every single shot, 100% committed. Whatever happens, I can only control my emotions and my game.”
Thompson couldn’t finish the first round because of darkness.
She resumed her round by missing a 20-foot par putt on the 17th hole.
She sent her approach on the 18th well right of the water, but chipped to 6 feet and made the par.
