After 20 seasons and over 400 episodes on Law & Order, Sam Waterston is officially leaving his post as District Attorney Jack McCoy — and his replacement has left some fans salivating.
Variety reports the actor will be leaving mid-season, with his last episode set to air on Thursday, Feb. 22, after which Tony Goldwyn — best known for playing opposite Kerry Washington in Scandal as her love interest and the messy President of the United States — will play the new District Attorney.
Waterston issued a statement after the news broke, praising the show for its “amazing long run.”
“There’s sadness in leaving, but I’m just too curious about what’s next. An actor doesn’t want to let himself get too comfortable,” he shared. “I’m more grateful to you than I can say. L&O’s continuing and amazing long run, along with its astounding come-back, is all thanks to you and to Dick Wolf, but for whose vision, patience, perseverance, and unique combination of creative and business talents, none of this would have happened. I feel very blessed. I hope to see you all on the flip side.”
Whether Goldwyn will be able to fill Waterston’s shoes as the longtime DA remains to be seen, but many fans have already started celebrating, with some wondering if that means his Scandal co-star will make a guest appearance.
“I stg, if Kerry Washington doesn’t guest star, we ride at dawn,” one fan wrote.
“Tony Goldwyn back on TV? LOOKS LIKE I’LL BE WATCHING L&O again,” another fan commented.
“MARISKA AND TONY GOLDWYN IN A CROSSOVER WOULD GIVE ME LIFEEEEE,” another fan wrote.
Still, not everyone was getting horny on main for Goldwyn. Some diehard fans were truly disappointed to hear that Waterston will be leaving the show.
“They almost had me out the door with Sam’s departure, but then they said Tony Goldwyn, so I’ll be seated!” a viewer tweeted.
The possibilities in the Law & Order-verse are endless! It is unclear when Goldwyn will be making his debut in Law & Order. But, needless to say, Scandal fans will be seated and waiting.
Law & Order airs on Thursdays on NBC at 8/7c.
