A volunteer cop with the Los Angeles Police Department who collapsed on live TV when he was attacked by a swarm of angry bees is seen swollen and bloodied in a photo from his hospital bed after being stung up to 100 times.
The nightmarish bee attack happened in the Encino section of Los Angeles late Monday afternoon and was captured by news helicopters hovering overhead.
In the footage, the uniformed civilian volunteer, who has been identified by his family only as Gary, is seen frantically swatting away bees buzzing around his head.
The insects relentlessly sting the man as he desperately tries to climb into his car, before losing his footing and collapsing face-first to the ground.
He was eventually rescued and taken to a hospital, where he was treated for fractures and bruises to his face.
His son, Daniel, told the station KTLA that his father is an Air Force veteran who has volunteered with the LAPD for nearly 18 years.
Daniel revealed that his dad was stung anywhere between 50-100 times and suffered multiple broken bones in the fall.
“It was gut-wrenching,” said the son, who watched his dad’s harrowing ordeal in real time on TV.
“I couldn’t even believe it. It looked so painful.”
The incident began unfolding around 4 p.m. when a worker doing renovations on a home in the area may have come too close to a massive hive, which sent the thousands of bees living inside into a frenzy.
Police were summoned and began sealing off the neighborhood pending the arrival of bee removal specialists.
Gary was on the scene helping with traffic control when he was attacked by the aggressive insects.
“This is not a normal behavior for these bees to be this angry, to want to kill you,” said Izak Kharrazi of All Valley Honey & Bee, an insect removal company called in to help with the situation told CBS News Los Angeles
The volunteer cop was treated with anti-venom medication to counteract the effects of the bee stings and will remain in the hospital for several more days.
His son said that because Gary is a volunteer, neither the LAPD nor the City of Los Angeles bears any responsibility to cover his medical expenses.
Daniel has launched a GoFundMe campaign to pay his dad’s hospital bills. So far, more than $3,190 has been raised.
