Ole Miss was -8.5, and Lane Kiffin knew it.
The never-shy head coach mentioned the betting line after his No. 20-ranked Runnin’ Rebels allowed a backdoor cover in their 30-23 win against the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday.
The field goal was ultimately inconsequential for the result, but for bettors, this kick potentially swung large amounts of money back and forth depending on what side you’re on.
Ole Miss led Kentucky, 30-20, when Wildcats kicker Jacob Kauwe put three points on the board with eight seconds left in the game.
With limited time, Ole Miss failed to score again in the contest, giving Kentucky the backdoor cover, and Kiffin was well aware.
“That’s a really hard team that plays really close games. So, I’m proud of our guys. Sorry to a lot of gamblers out there,” Kiffin said.
ESPN play-by-play announcer Sean McDonagh didn’t shy away from mentioning this either, highlighting that gambling is part of the entire football experience, saying the not-so-quiet part out loud.
“Lane hit the nail on the head,” McDonough acknowledged following Kiffin’s post-game interview on the broadcast.
McDonough continued, “Gambling is part of it now, so we might as well acknowledge, the field goal changed the spread. Ole Miss went off as a 7.5-point favorite, and it also took it from the under to the over. The over/under was 51.5. The game ends at 53 with the field goal.”

He later added, “Why do you torture yourself wagering on these things in the first place?”
The win puts Ole Miss at 2-0 on the young season ahead of their contest next week against the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Kentucky drops to 1-1 on the year and will host Eastern Michigan next week.
