Underestimate Kyler Murray all you want, he loves it.
CBS Sports’ Will Brinson came out with his tiered quarterback rankings on Thursday and, somewhat surprisingly, placed Murray in the sixth row, just one up from the bottom.
“I love it,” Murray said in a tweet on Thursday in response to his low standing.
While the Arizona QB was selected first overall in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Cardinals, an injury-laden season has derailed the high expectations set for Murray when entering the league.
The two-time Pro Bowler tore his ACL in December 2022 in a week 12 matchup against the Patriots and underwent surgery on January 3.
ACL recovery is estimated to take eight months to a year.
Murray is expected to return to the field in 2023, but the exact timeline has not been made clear by Arizona.
“The Cardinals’ star quarterback is in the midst of his ACL recovery and is pushing to return to action as early as possible, according to a source with close knowledge of the situation,” Cardinals insider Kyle Odegard said, according to Sports Illustrated.
“However, the new coaching staff in Arizona has been trying to manage those expectations, intent on taking a measured approach to ensure there is a low chance of re-injury.”
Prior to injury, Murray threw for 2,368 yards and 14 touchdowns in 11 games played in the 2022 season.
Brinson’s tier six ranking –– which he labeled the “No Clue, Man” group –– of Murray was because of the uncertainty around the 2020 Offensive Rookie of the Year’s upcoming season on a squad that is in the beginning stages of a rebuild.
“Kyler could go anywhere on this list and could also be his own tier because I couldn’t possibly begin to guess how MUCH he plays in 2023, much less how WELL he plays this coming season,” Brinson said.
“The Cards might very well sit on him knowing they want to move on next year after a full-fledge tank sesh.”
Murray seemingly does not care about the noise and, instead, is using it as fuel for his comeback performance.
The Cardinals open the 2023 NFL season on Sept. 10 against the Commanders.
