Perhaps the Mets were right about Kumar Rocker.
Texas Rangers executive vice president and general manager Chris Young told reporters on Tuesday that the 23-year-old right-hander has a torn ligament in his pitching elbow and will undergo Tommy John surgery this week.
Rocker suffered an “acute” injury while pitching that was different than anything the club had noticed in previous exams, Young said, per the Dallas Morning News.
The Mets selected Rocker out of Vanderbilt at No. 10 overall in the 2021 MLB Draft, agreeing on a $6 million signing bonus, but concerns over Rocker’s elbow led the Mets to not signing him by the Aug. 1 deadline to sign draft picks.
Rocker’s agent Scott Boras insisted at the time that the pitcher was healthy.
Boras told ESPN last July that Rocker underwent shoulder surgery, “a minor scope,” on his right arm in September 2021.
Rocker then pitched for the Tri-City ValleyCats of the independent Frontier League in 2022, allowing three earned runs in 20 innings with 32 strikeouts across five appearances.
He was then picked No. 3 overall by the Rangers in last year’s draft.
In six appearances for Single-A Hickory this season, Rocker had a 3.86 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 28 innings across six starts.
Young told reporters that Rocker was on the verge of getting promoted.
“We got a glimpse of how good he is and it confirmed everything we thought,” Young said, via the Dallas Morning News.
After not signing Rocker, the Mets received a compensatory first-round pick at No. 11 overall in the 2022 draft, which they used to select Georgia Tech catcher Kevin Parada, who is currently playing for the Brooklyn Cyclones.
The Mets took high school shortstop Jett Williams three picks later.
