The first few episodes of the highly anticipated Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake spinoff have finally landed on Max, but after watching, some fans have been left wondering one thing: Who is voicing Prismo?

According to Kumail Nanjiani, who voiced the character in the original series, it was definitely not him. The Marvel actor stated on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he was “never asked” to return to voice the character — a claim that showrunner Adam Muto swiftly denied.

“Yeah that’s not me. I would have loved to have voiced Prismo again. He’s one of my absolute favorite characters I’ve ever had the honor of playing. He is very close to my heart,” Nanjiani wrote in a since-deleted post, according to screenshots of the exchange. “Unfortunately they never asked me to come back and voice him again. I would have done it for free.”

Muto swiftly replied to claim that they actually sent “several offers” to Nanjiani’s representation.

“Hey, we would have loved to have you back. We were told by casting that several offers went out to your reps. We said we could be flexible in scheduling but received a respectful pass. Sorry it didn’t work out,” he wrote.

The actor stated that he would take the matter up with his representation and asked for more information so he could “figure out what happened.”

“Wow. They never told me. That is ridiculous. I am very sorry for that. And I will be talking to my reps. Can you tell me when you would have sent the offer? I want to figure out what happened. And congrats on the premiere!” Nanjiani wrote back.

Nanjiani voiced Prismo on seven episodes of the original Adventure Time series between 2012 and 2016.

The new series follows Fionna the Human and Cake the Cat, who are alternative-universe versions of the original characters Finn and Jake. In this YA series, Fionna and Cake go on an adventure across the multiverse, where they run into some powerful new enemies as well as some old friends.

The new series, which is the third installment of the franchise, premiered Aug. 31 on Max to positive reviews. In Decider’s Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake review, Brittany Vincent wrote that it was a “triumphant return” to the world of Ooo that “hits all the high notes fans have been waiting for.”

New episodes of Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake air on Thursdays on Max.
