The Knicks are looking to their G League for a little center depth.
The team is signing Ukranian Dmytro Skapintsev to a two-way contract, a league source confirmed Saturday morning.
Skapintsev, a 25-year-old, has been playing for the Westchester Knicks this season while averaging about 15 minutes and 4.3 points with 4.4 rebounds.
More importantly for the Knicks, Skapintsev is 7-foot-1 and physical.
Tom Thibodeau’s club only hold two healthy centers on its current roster with Mitchell Robinson and Jericho Sims both injured.
Isaiah Hartentstein and Taj Gibson will likely remain the top two in the rotation — with Hartenstein getting the bulk of minutes.
But Skapintsev provides a big body if trouble emerges.
Thibodeau has also said he’ll utilize Julius Randle or Josh Hart at center in a pinch.
Sims is expected to be out about another week with a sprained ankle, an injury sustained on the tipoff of Monday’s victory over the Lakers.
Robinson’s recovery timeline is a mystery.
The Knicks, a source confirmed, filed for a Disabled Player Exception following ankle surgery — an indication that they’re anticipating he’ll be out for the season — but publicly they haven’t acknowledged that as a possibility.
On Friday, Thibodeau stood by the original announcement of a re-evaluation in eight to 10 weeks.
A source said Robinson suffered a fracture and the surgery included a screw insertion.
“My understanding is he’ll be re-evaluated in eight to 10 weeks,” Thibodeau said. “Once you get that information, then you have a better idea. I think the front office has to do their due diligence on everything. So you just let the process play out.
“I don’t know exactly where it stands (with Robinson’s recovery). What I understand is that in eight to 10 weeks, he’s gonna be re-evaluated.”
On Friday night, Robinson wrote on Snapchat that he “hopes” he’s not out for the season.
After a pro career overseas — which was briefly interrupted by the Russian invasion of Ukraine — Skapintsev broke out in Summer League for the Knicks.
He then signed an Exhibit 10 deal with New York before helping its G League club win the Winter Showcase in Orlando last week.
The Knicks waived Jaylen Martin, who was previously on a two-way deal, to create the spot to sign Skapintsev.
