The Knicks haven’t yet asked permission to interview Jason Kidd for their vacant coaching position. But if it ever gets to that point, the expectation is the Mavericks front office will decline the request, a league source told The Post. 

Kidd signed an extension with the Mavericks just last year and has two years remaining on his deal. The Knicks, who fired Tom Thibodeau last week, are interested in hiring Kidd, but require a thumbs-up from the Mavericks. 

Kidd has previously maneuvered relocations while under contract — as a player and coach — and perhaps it’s unwise to rule out a change of heart if things get messy (especially if ownership gets involved). But as of Tuesday, the Mavericks had no interest in entertaining the idea of allowing Kidd to join the Knicks, a source said. 

A year ago, Kidd was a target for the open Lakers position and leveraged both that interest and the Mavericks’ success into a contract extension.
