The Knicks are in rough shape now that Julius Randle will miss the remainder of the season after opting for shoulder surgery.
And they’re now considered long shots to do postseason damage.
As of Feb. 20, the Knicks had the third-best odds to win the Eastern Conference at +700 and had +1800 odds to win the NBA championship at BetMGM.
Mass injuries and pessimism have since brought New York tumbling down to 20/1 to win the East and they now own 50/1 odds to hoist the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy.
The doom and gloom have put even the Eastern Conference’s sixth—and eighth-seeded teams, the Heat and 76ers, respectively, ahead of the Knicks in terms of conference odds.
New York now has the sixth-best odds to win the Eastern Conference and is tied with the Warriors for the 13th-best championship odds.
Losing Randle limits the Knicks’ upside, as he’s arguably the second or third-most important player on the team. The Knicks’ net rating when he is on the floor is 6.0, which is third-highest among starters by a wide margin, with only Josh Hart (6.2) and Jalen Brunson (8.1) ranking higher.

With Randle off the floor, the Knicks’ net rating is down to 3.7, the third-lowest among starters, still behind Brunson (-3.5) and Hart (1.6).
For one, these stats amplify how important Hart is to the Knicks, but Randle’s offense prowess is absolutely critical to a Knicks team that doesn’t have much on that side of the ball.

With Randle on the floor, New York was 29-17, compared to 15-14 in his absence.
However, there are many other injuries to consider here as the Knicks were barely treading water without Mitchell Robinson and OG Anunoby.
Randle had been criticized for past postseason failures, including a 29.8 percent field goal percentage in the 2021 postseason.
But Randle’s injury is a tough blow for the Knicks, who will have to make do with the pieces they have in place and hope Anunoby returns come May.
