NextImg:Klay Thompson poised to hit free agency after ‘no notable moment’ with Warriors extension

Klay Thompson and the Warriors seem headed toward a divorce.

The four-time NBA champ, who’s played for Golden State his entire 13-year career, appears set to hit free agency as negotiations for a long-term deal have stalled, with little urgency on the Warriors’ end, The Athletic reported Friday.

“There’s been no notable movement from either side,” league sources told the outlet.

The Warriors want Thompson back — as one part of the splash brothers with superstar Steph Curry — but only at right price, and after they’ve addressed other areas in retooling their roster, per the report.

Thompson, 34, can explore the open market once he’s an unrestricted free agent at the end of June.

NBA teams can begin negotiating with their own free agents the day after the last game of the 2024 NBA Finals — which is set between the Maverick and the Celtics, with Game 1 tipping off in Boston on June 6.

NBA teams can officially sign players starting July 6 at 12:01 p.m. ET.

Thompson and the Warriors are at a crossroads after more than a decade together.

The orgazniation will soon be forced to decide to either keep its dynasty core together — Thompson, Curry and Draymond Green — or split up the trio that led them to four titles in eight years.

Thompson went scoreless in the Warriors’ season-ending loss to the Kings in the play-in tournament.

After the game, he called it “ridiculous” when reporters asked about his future with Golden State because he “had time” before handling that.

He instead wanted to discuss how he played 77 games this past season, the most since the 2018-19 campaign before he tore an ACL and an Achilles.

Thompson averaged 17.9 points per game and shot 38.7 percent from 3 in the regular season.

“A lot of games played man, that was a pretty big accomplishment. What’s up with y’all not wanting to live in the present? Ridiculous,” he said at the time.

Those injuries understandingly impacted Thompson’s game and his production at this stage in his career.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr explained after their season ended that the Warriors want Thompson to remain with the team.

“We need Klay back…” Kerr said. “I know I speak for everybody in the organization. We want him back. Obviously, there’s business at hand and that has to be addressed with Klay’s representatives … as good as he still is, we desperately want him back.”

He added: “He’s still got good years left.”

Green also discussed Thompson’s loyalty to the Warriors, saying, “I’ve got no reason to think, oh man, they’re not going to do right by Klay.”

At the time, ESPN reported that Thompson wanted a new deal that aligned with Curry and Green’s.

Curry and Green are under contract with the Warriors through the 2025-26 season. Green has a player option for 2026-27.

Thompson praised the Warriors’ ownership after their 2023-24 season ended.

He has yet to address his future with the team since the loss.

Thompson spent the last month traveling and decompressing after an early trip to the offseason.

He was seen taking in a Sparks-Fever game at Crypto.com Arena last week.
