The Red Sox have been denied by yet another big-name executive.
Kim Ng, former general manager for the Marlins and first female general manager among the major professional North American sports leagues, has declined an interview with Boston to run their baseball operations, MassLive reported.
Ng, Miami’s GM from 2021-23, helped the Marlins reach the postseason in 2023 with an 84-78 record but became a free agent after stepping away from the team when the Marlins let her know they were planning on hiring someone above her in the baseball operations department.
It’s unclear why Ng, who turned down her mutual 2024 option with the Marlins, declined to talk with the Red Sox.
MassLive reported that Boston had a strong interest in her potentially replacing former chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom, who was fired in September.
Ng became the latest in a growing list of candidates to turn down the Red Sox.
The list of those who have now declined interviews with Boston, according to MassLive, includes Phillies GM Sam Fuld, former Rangers GM and current Rays adviser Jon Daniels, Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey and Diamondbacks GM Mike Hazen, among others.
Former Astros GM James Click also took himself out of contention after interviewing due to family considerations, the Boston Globe reported Wednesday.
MassLive previously reported some potential candidates have not liked the amount of turnover the Red Sox have experienced in the front office over the last decade.
Bloom had 17 games left in his fourth season in his position in Boston when owner John Henry, chairman Tom Werner, and CEO Sam Kennedy confirmed the news of his ouster in a team release.
“While parting ways is not taken lightly, today signals a new direction for our club,” Henry said in the September release. “Our organization has significant expectations on the field and while Chaim’s efforts in revitalizing our baseball infrastructure have helped set the stage for the future, we will today begin a search for new leadership.”
According to MassLive, candidates outside of the Red Sox organization include Cubs assistant GM Craig Breslow, Twins GM Thad Levine, former Pirates GM Neal Huntington and recently fired Giants manager Gabe Kapler.
Ng previously worked in multiple organizations, including the Yankees from 1998-2001, but could take this year off, sources told MassLive.
