NextImg:Keyshawn Johnson: Gang members ‘ticked off’ with Ja Morant

People from all walks of life are questioning what Ja Morant is doing.

Morant faces a potentially lengthy NBA suspension after he appeared to flash a gun on IG Live over the weekend. It comes just a couple months after receiving an eight-game NBA suspension for doing that before and on the heels of several different NBA investigations into allegations that Morant and/or members of his circle had threatened violence.

Memphis media member Geoff Calkins was on the line with ESPN Radio’s national morning program, “Keyshawn, J-Will and Max” Monday morning, when Keyshawn Johnson mentioned that gang members themselves had serious questions about Morant’s recent conduct.

“A notable gang member of a certain very powerful gang here in L.A. didn’t like the fact that Ja was doing those things in some of his games, along with portraying himself, to a degree, as some sort of hip-hop street gangster growing up in the hood when he hasn’t,” Johnson said, as covered by Barrett Sports Media.

“Those are the sort of things that I worry about because you’re aligning yourself in a position that you know nothing about at all whatsoever – zero about. That’s where I look at the team and the league and to be able to say, ‘You’ve got to get him the necessary help that he needs; serious help.’”

In a separate segment, Johnson said he grew up in Los Angeles around gun violence and that Morant is “not from the streets.”

Johnson continued that “people from the streets are kind of ticked off by his behavior because they would die to be in his shoes” and be a basketball star.

But, Johnson said, Morant finds himself on a path to “squander” a $200 million deal.

If Johnson was not speaking from his own intel on how gang members felt, it’s possible he saw a clip that made the rounds on social media over the weekend of the rapper Bricc Baby, a member of the Crips, admonishing Morant for his recent behavior and for throwing up apparent gang signs during NBA competition.

“He ain’t f–king with the gangland like that,” Bricc Baby said. “You throwing them ‘Ns’ up, that’s gonna cost you. … What you wanna do, pay the crips for the rest of your life?”
