The Rockets have traded Kevin Porter Jr. to the Thunder amid his legal troubles and the Thunder will waive him and make him a free agent, according to ESPN.
Houston is sending Porter Jr. and two future second-round picks to rid themselves of Porter Jr. in exchange for Victor Oladipo and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, per the report.
Porter Jr.’s career is in jeopardy after he was arrested in September for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend – former WNBA player Kysre Gondrezick – in a Manhattan hotel.
Porter Jr. is alleged to have hit Gondreick multiple times and placed his hands around her neck, per the police.
He was charged with assault and strangulation at the time, according to cops.
Porter Jr. was originally alleged to have fractured Gondrezick’s vertebra, but Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Mirah Curzer said the office would throw out a charge of second-degree assault against Porter due to “insufficient evidence” after it was shown that he did not break Gondrezick’s neck.
“What initially appeared to be a fractured vertebrae was not in fact an injury caused by the defendant,” Curzer told Judge Jay Weiner during the hearing on Monday.
Porter Jr., 23, is still facing charges of second-degree strangulation and third-degree assault, and faces a maximum of seven years in jail if convicted on the strangulation charge.
He and his legal team rejected a plea deal the lower the assault charge with the condition he would undergo counseling, and he has been freed on $75,000 bail.
He is due back in court Nov. 27.
Before that next court date, Porter Jr. will find out whether or not any team wants to sign him.
The Rockets told Porter Jr., who signed a four-year, $82.5 million extension last October, he could not be part of the team following the allegations.
The team sought a trade and finally found a match in the Thunder, who also have no use for him.
The transaction cost the Rockets two future second-round picks in the form of a 2027 pick from the Timberwolves and a 2028 pick from the Bucks, according to ESPN.
The Rockets are receiving Oladipo, who averaged 10.7 points for the Heat last year but has struggled to stay healthy in his career, and Robinson-Earl, who averaged 7.2 points in his first two seasons.
