NextImg:Kevin McCarthy insists he won’t quit Congress after speaker ejection

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said Friday that he has no plans to resign his seat and will run for a 10th term next year.

McCarthy (R-Calif.), who lost his speakership Tuesday after an unprecedented vote to depose him, was rumored to be considering an early exit from Congress, according to Politico

The 58-year-old denied that report, telling KGET 17 News in his hometown of Bakersfield that he will finish out his current term representing California’s 20th Congressional District and seek re-election in 2024.

McCarthy was first elected to Congress in 2006 and worked his way up the House Republican hierarchy until grabbing the gavel in January.

When asked about his future after Tuesday’s vote, McCarthy did not rule out resigning, telling reporters: “I haven’t thought about that.”

Reports speculating on McCarthy’s early departure indicated that he would stay on at least through the election of a new speaker, which is tentatively scheduled for next week.

McCarthy, who was given the boot three days shy of the nine-month anniversary of his election as speaker on the 15th ballot, has ruled himself out as a candidate to retake the job.

The former speaker said in his Tuesday night exit speech and news conference that he expects to “continue to fight” for the American people but “maybe in a different manner.”

“I’ll do anything I can to help almost all of you,” he reportedly told his GOP colleagues behind closed doors after being voted out of the speaker’s chair. “Don’t worry, I’ve raised a helluva lot of money in the last hour,”

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) have both announced their candidacy and are considered the front-runners to succeed McCarthy.

Former President Donald Trump, once the preferred choice of several House Republicans, gave Jordan his “Complete & Total Endorsement” on Friday, and said that he plans to attend a candidate forum in Washington, DC, on Tuesday of next week.

Trump, 77, had previously said that he would consider a short-term stint as speaker of the House, if necessary to bring together warring factions of the GOP.
