Kenny Pickett apparently thought the media didn’t want to hear from a backup quarterback.
Pickett was not present for the Steelers’ final media availabilities after their season-ending wild-card loss to the Bills on Monday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
His no-show raises even more questions about his future with the organization that drafted him in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
Once considered the Steelers’ heir apparent to Ben Roethlisberger, Pickett instead may have been Wally Pipp’d by Mason Rudolph, who started the playoff loss.
Rudolph took control of the starting gig in Week 15 and led the Steelers to three straight wins and a playoff berth before their season ended in a 31-17 loss to the Bills.
Pickett said he was healthy enough to return in Week 17 against the Seahawks after recovering from an ankle injury, but coach Mike Tomlin rode with Rudolph down the stretch.
The Steelers now enter the offseason with a potential quarterback controversy.
Pickett has underwhelmed in his two seasons leading the team, throwing for fewer than 2,500 yards in each season while missing nine games over his first two years.
He’s thrown just 13 touchdowns and also tossed 13 interceptions in his 25 career starts, with the touchdowns sticking out in an era where quarterbacks light up the scoreboards.

Pickett threw for 2,070 yards with six touchdowns and four interceptions in 12 games this season, while adding one rushing score.
Rudolph, a third-round pick in 2018, was the team’s third-string quarterback entering the season but he played well down the stretch.
He threw for 229 yards, along with two touchdowns and one interception in Monday’s loss.
It’s possible Pickett could ask for a trade, or perhaps he will come to camp and attempt to wrestle the job back from Rudolph.
No matter the route, Steelers fans won’t know how Pickett feels until the team’s next organized media availability, like OTAs.
