Ken Jennings may not have seen this one coming.
On Monday night’s (Oct. 28) episode of Jeopardy!, Jennings read the following clue in the “Complete the Rhyming Phrase” category: “Men seldom make passes at…,” per Entertainment Weekly.
Contestant Will Wallace issued the correct, albeit seemingly controversial, response — “girls in glasses” — a quote from poet and author Dorothy Parker.
Jennings addressed the answer as “a little problematic” and issued an apology to Heather Ryan, a female contestant donning glasses.
In support of Ryan, Wallace added, “Very.”
Fans of the game show have been quick to call out its questionable moments in the past, such as “tricky” questions and inaccuracies. In November, Jennings caught flak online for a “cringe-worthy” assisted living facility joke he made on the air.
Former Jeopardy! host Mayim Bialik, who revealed that she had been fired from the show December 2023, made her way back onto the show earlier this month via a Big Bang Theory clue referencing her and Jim Parsons‘ Amy and Sheldon.

A streaming Jeopardy! spinoff hosted by Colin Jost titled Pop Culture Jeopardy! is heading to Prime Video. The new iteration of the famed game show, which “combines the academic rigor of Jeopardy! with the excitement and unpredictability of pop culture,” will debut on the streamer on Dec. 4, per Parade.
As noted by TV Insider, Wallace ultimately bested Ryan by just $1, while fellow contestant Ian Taylor came in third.
Jeopardy! airs on weeknights at 7/6c. Check out their website for your local listings.
