There’s the Irish goodbye, and then there’s the Mark Consuelos goodbye.

After bringing up the news of a U.K. school class helping Gen Z combat “telephobia” on Tuesday’s Live with Kelly and Mark, Consuelos admitted that he’s been told he “get[s] off the phone abruptly.”

Kelly Ripa confirmed, “Every time you get off the phone, everybody thinks they’re in a fight with you, 100%.”

Consuelos argued that he’s “moving on with [his] life” after hanging up, noting, “when we’re done talking, we’re done.”

However, Ripa claimed that her husband and co-host “sometimes” doesn’t even say goodbye.

Consuelos confessed, “No, I say goodbye. I’m like, ‘Bye,’… When I push the hang up, I hear people still talking.”

Ripa eventually told Consuelos that he doesn’t “have a good demeanor.”

“In general?” Consuelos asked. “Just on the phone?”

Ripa explained that Consuelos’ “phone voice” and “FaceTime” voice are “very unfriendly.” Though Consuelos requested that Ripa “show” him what she means, she insisted that she “can’t do it.”

“I don’t have that level of hostility in me,” she joked.

Consuelos conceded, “I have to get better at that. Maybe I should take that class.”

Ripa cited a specific example of herself and Consuelos FaceTiming one of their children who she said “shall remain nameless, but it was his birthday.”

“You were, like, very like — giving him a list of tasks that he had to accomplish,” she continued. “And I was like, ‘And happy birthday!’ I kept coming in with, ‘And happy birthday!'”

In Consuelos’ defense, that was his “third call” with said child at the time. Nonetheless, he noted that his calls to Italy — where his mother is from and where he owns a soccer team — differ tremendously, as Italians conclude their calls with many “ciaos.” Ripa highlighted that was “one of the first things” she noticed on calls between Consuelos and his parents.

“When you and your parents would speak in Italian to each other, how long it would take you to get off the phone because you would all say ‘ciao’ 800 times before a hang-up would happen,” she elaborated. “But in English, you’re like, ‘Alright, I’ll talk to you later.’ And I’m like, ‘What do you want me to do? I’m not done!’ In English, you are very abrupt, but in Italian, you take all frickin’ day.”

Consuelos quipped, “You gotta learn Italian.”
