Kelly Ripa dished on a missed TV gig on this morning’s Live with Kelly and Mark after learning that the very show she’d once auditioned for was being resurrected for a reboot: Melrose Place.
Ripa brought up the news of the exciting project from CBS Studios in the works with series alums Heather Locklear, Laura Leighton, and Daphne Zuniga. Mark Consuelos chimed in and teased, “Are they gonna be playing, like, shuffleboard?”
“Bridge? Canasta?” he continued, prompting Ripa to remind him that “they’re [their] age” and to “calm down.”
“I see some young people here saying, ‘What’s Melrose Place?'” she said. “Well, I’ll tell you. Back when there were three channels on the television set, and we used to watch TV on a television set. You would change the channel with your hands.”
The two proceeded to take a trip down memory lane as they recalled to the studio audience how the television set was a substantial “piece of furniture” on its own. Ripa recounted how you would drag the family phone from the kitchen to the room so that you could “discuss Melrose Place” with a friend in real time.
Eventually, Consuelos asked Ripa if she watched the hit FOX drama, to which she revealed that she actually auditioned for the series.
“Spoiler alert: I didn’t get it!” she exclaimed, as she jokingly threw her paper behind her in feigned frustration.

Consuelos proceeded to ask, “Are you like me, when I audition —”
Ripa interjected and teased, “If I didn’t get a job, it’s a stupid show? Yeah.”
Consuelos shared the same outlook, noting that if he auditioned for a project and doesn’t get the role, he’s “not watching it.”
“Yeah, I’m not watching the movie. I’m not watching the TV show,” he explained, to which Ripa quipped, “That’s why our viewing is very limited.”
“We’re down to… We only watch documentaries on cults,” she joked.
Consuelos then claimed that he “never watched Melrose Place.”
“But that was a phenomenon, right?” he asked. “It was the same time as Beverly Hills, 90210, right?”
In another burst of fake anger, Ripa grabbed more paper and uttered between her teeth, “Another show I didn’t get!”
However, this was all in jest, as she clarified to Consuelos that she actually “didn’t audition for that.”
“So I can’t blame them,” she added.
