Kelly Ripa is popping a popular pimple practice.
She tackled the trend of decorative pimple patches on this morning’s Live with Kelly and Mark, teasing that they “got a lot to unpack here” and scanning the audience to see if any audience members were wearing them.
“They’re becoming the breakout fashion statement of the summer, and I’m here to say no,” she deadpanned. “Don’t get me wrong, I like a pimple patch. I’ll wear one.”
After Mark Consuelos asked if the patches are “visible” and if they’re like “a band-aid” you put over your blemish, Ripa confirmed as much, adding that now “they’re making them fashion statements.”
“They’re making stars and hearts and things,” she explained, teasing that this certainly wasn’t the case “back in the day.”
“We had Swatch watches back then,” Consuelos quipped.
Ripa continued, “Back in the day, we used to go to great lengths to cover our pimples. To cover them.”
Consuelos and Ripa agreed that a zit “would ruin your day.”
“You got a pimple, you had to get the cover-up, it’s never a shade found in nature,” she recalled. “Cover-up used to look like whiteout.”
Consuelos was reminded of a popular remedy among soap opera actors, asking Ripa, “What was that white stuff… that would come, ‘Dr.’ something?”
Ripa eventually remembered, “Mario Badescu,” recalling that the product “would dry white” and “you would try to cover it up.”

“Anyway, you would spend a lot of time covering it up,” she added. “Now, it is in fashion to wear your pimples proudly and cover them with bright stars and hearts and you name it. And then, we’re all supposed to walk away and pretend we don’t see the pimple patch. And I think that a little modesty goes a long way with your pimples. Because pimples are like nipples.”
As Consuelos and the audience laughed, Ripa cracked a smile and began to chuckle.
