As someone who utterly despises the sound of chewing, Kelly Ripa made me feel seen while dishing on the one thing she can’t stand about her husband and co-host Mark Consuelos during this morning’s episode of Live with Kelly and Mark.
The convo was sparked by a survey that ranks the “best food sounds” — ranging from “stir-frying vegetables” to the “popping of popcorn.” When Consuelos read “the first bite into a crisp apple” off the list, he pointed out that his wife is not a fan of that sound.
“Especially when it’s your mouth,” she told him. “You have a cavernous mouth cavity. And so it’s not just the crispy first bite. The sound of him chewing fills me with rage. I have to leave the room and sometimes — I have to leave the apartment.”
Consuelos protested that her anger over his chewing is “unreasonable,” before turning to the audience for validation.
“How else are you supposed to eat an apple? I’m a man!” he exclaimed. “There’s no messing around with it! You want to bite into that thing. You want to have some gratification. [There’s] not a lot of juice in an apple but you want it to come down your hand.”
He added, “Forget about a peach!” while Ripa — who visibly cringed — joked, “If he eats a peach, I leave the state. I’ll be in New Jersey. You call me when you’re done.”
Later on in the segment, Consuelos was provided with an apple to demonstrate just how loud he typically bites into one. Following his “aggressive” crunch, Ripa joked that she was going to offer money to today’s guest — UFC champion Conor McGregor — to “submit” her husband.
“Like a lion in a savannah — that’s how I eat,” Consuelos said, to which Ripa quipped, “Oh, is that how lions in the savannah eat their apples? Their organic, gala apples.”
Live with Kelly and Mark airs on weekdays at 9/8c on ABC.
