Kelly Ripa was open with Live with Kelly and Mark viewers about the struggle to keep her glutes in check. On Friday, Mark Consuelos read about how “backward walking may be the best exercise you’re not doing.”
Ripa told her husband and co-host, “You backward walk sometimes, and it drives me nuts.”
Consuelos continued highlighting the benefits of the exercise, noting that backward walking “engages different muscles than walking forward, activating the glutes, the hamstrings and the calves, and stretching the quads and the hips.”
“You just need a spotter with you. You need somebody to walk behind you or just guide you,” he explained. “That’s the one thing. You can’t really — how long can you actually walk backwards without…”
However, Ripa claimed Consuelos can “do it for quite a while,” saying that she’s “always impressed” when he walks backwards.
“But I’m there as your humble guide,” she acknowledged. “I guide him around.”
Live EP Michael Gelman proposed from off-camera that “the beach is safer” to try out this exercise, as Consuelos agreed, “What are you going to do? Walk into the water?”

Nonetheless, Ripa opened up about a difficulty she’s experienced with age.
“I don’t know about you guys, but I’m going to speak on behalf of myself. The older I get, the harder it is to engage — and I’m constantly trying to engage my glutes,” she shared. “Like, I’m doing it right now. But they just don’t seem to — they don’t fire up the way they used to.”
Consuelos offered up an explanation, telling Ripa that “it has to do with your hips.”
“Internal rotation and external rotation of your hips,” he added.
