There’s nothing like watching Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos‘ marital disputes play out on live television. During this morning’s episode of Live with Kelly & Mark, the longtime couple worked through a debate and ultimately came to a compromise over which side of the bed they sleep on.
The two revealed that the air conditioning broke in their room just in time for New York City’s ongoing heat wave. While Consuelos said a “tropical fruit” could be grown in their bedroom, Ripa — who’s not a fan of the cold — said it’s the “first time” in their marriage that she hasn’t woken up in the middle of the night freezing.
According to Consuelos, Ripa took over his side of the bed when he moved to Vancouver to film Riverdale. When he suggested that he move back to the right side because that’s where the vent is, his wife reminded him that he has “never lived on the right side of the bed.”
Despite Consuelos insisting that he “did for a minute,” Ripa got heated as she continued to tell him he was “wrong” and that his claims were “not true.” She even accused him of “gaslighting” her at one point.
“I sleep closest to the door. No matter where we are I sleep closest to the door,” she explained. “Why? I understand, now our children are grown and they don’t live at home. But old habits die hard. When you have to get up in the middle of the night and nurse the baby, you sleep closest to the door. It’s the privilege of getting to wake up 17 times a night.”
Eventually, Consuelos told her that they should “switch” once the AC is up and running again so that he can “freeze out,” while she can be “nice and warm on the other side.” After Ripa agreed to the plan, the actor joked about the headlines that could be made from their on-air spat.
“Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa fight over whose side of the bed. Major news! Click, click, click, click. He puts his foot down finally! Click, click, click, click,” he joked, before Ripa sarcastically responded, “Yes, because poor Mark has never gotten his way.”
