Katy Perry will be returning for the new season of American Idol, even after the sometimes-controversial judge got fans riled up with her treatment of the contestants in Season 21.

TV Line reports Perry will be returning for Season 22 of the singing competition alongside her fellow judges, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.

This news comes just months after rumors began to swirl that she was considering leaving the show because she felt like she was being made to look like the “nasty judge,” according to Daily Mail sources.

Perry made headlines throughout this year’s season, often when viewers at home weighed in on how she treated contestants on the show.

The season got off to a bad start when Perry was accused of mom-shaming a 25-year-old mother-of-three, who called the pop star’s remarks “hurtful.” In another instance, she was criticized for using “psychological warfare” on contestants by tricking them into thinking they were being sent home.

Perry was also booed for the very first time in her five years as an American Idol judge when she advised a contestant to wear less glitter during her performances.

Still, she seemed to have one ally on the show in Oliver Steele, a contestant who defended her when he proclaimed on Instagram in May, “Katy is not a bully, nor does she shame people.”

Ryan Seacrest is also set to return as host despite already signing on to replace Pat Sajak on Wheel of Fortune. New episodes of Wheel starring Seacrest will likely begin airing in September 2024, so he’ll have some extra time in his busy year to continue hosting the singing competition, too.

Seacrest has been a staple on the show since it first premiered in 2002. Meanwhile, the judges have become an enjoyable mainstay on the show since joining in 2018, when the show was rebooted by ABC after airing on FOX for years.

Season 21 saw Hawaiian singer and crowd favorite Iam Tongi crowned as winner after an especially emotional Idol run.

A release date for American Idol Season 22 has not been announced yet, but it is expected to premiere sometime next spring. Auditions are set to begin Aug. 2, so singers should take their shot while they can.
