This is one royal repeat that has us seeing double.
Kate Middleton 41, engaged in some friendly competition with Prince William, 41, when the pair cheered on different teams at the Wales vs. England Six Nations rugby match in Cardiff, Wales on Saturday — and her houndstooth coat brings back memories of Princess Diana.
Wearing a black turtleneck with the same red-and-white Catherine Walker coat she sported during her pregnancy with Prince Louis in 2018, the Princess of Wales channeled the Moschino suit jacket her late mother-in-law sported in the early 1990s.
Princess Diana wore her red-and-white houndstooth jacket with a black turtleneck and coordinating black-and-white pencil skirt to Princess Eugenie’s christening in 1990, later re-wearing the striking outfit on a 1991 visit to Toronto.
And while the coat was a repeat for Middleton, her fresh styling with the addition of a turtleneck made it even more similar to Diana’s while, in 2018, she wore the Catherine Walker ensemble sans sweater, adding burgundy heels and carrying a matching maroon Chanel handbag.
Her updated look included a white Mulberry bag, black tights and a pair of black suede Aquatalia suede booties that she’s worn for years, even sporting a brown version of the style as far back as 2011.
As for Middleton, her choice of coat was not only a nod to Diana, but a case of diplomatic dressing; red is the color of the Welsh rugby team, while white honors England.
This also isn’t the first time she’s channeled Diana’s style in houndstooth at an England vs. Wales rugby match.
Last year, the Princess of Wales donned a different black-and-white patterned jacket by Holland Cooper ($600) that resembled a look Diana wore to watch the same teams play in 1993.
Of course, as patron of England’s Rugby Football Union and Rugby Football League, fans (and Prince William) knew who she was really cheering for on Saturday, despite her diplomatic coat.
“If we win today my wife won’t speak to me,” Prince William, who is patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, said to reporters before the big match. “It will be a tense evening.”
Luckily for the princess (and William), her coat proved to be a good luck charm as England came out as the victors of this weekend’s match.
