NextImg:Karl-Anthony Towns mocked for outlandish claims on podcast: ‘I changed the game’

Karl-Anthony Towns is not the 7-foot center who just won an NBA title.

But he’s certainly talking like he did.

On “The Pat Bev Podcast with Rone,” Towns made several claims to Patrick Beverley, but one quote really caught the attention of the basketball world.

“When my time’s up and I retire…there’s going to be people who are going to say that I changed the game,” Towns said.

Former NBA center and current ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins had a snappy retort for Towns on “First Take.”

“How can you change the game when at times we don’t even know you exist?”

Twitter had a field day with the quotes, with one user saying, “Someone said the only he changes is his voice,” with a few laughing emoji.

With plenty of Twitter users agreeing with Perkins, another said, “I forget he plays all the time,” in reference to Towns.

But Towns wasn’t done after his first proclamation.

He also told Beverley that the Timberwolves’ 2022 playoff run, in which they won a play-in tournament game and then lost in the first round to the Memphis Grizzlies, was “more special” than the Denver Nuggets’ championship this season because they had less time to gel together as a team.

The Minnesota center, a three-time All-Star who was the first overall pick in 2015, has averaged 23 points and 11 rebounds on 39% 3-point shooting in his career.

Towns is also one of the better-shooting big men from beyond the arc in NBA history, as he’s the only center to have more than one season making over 100 3-pointers and shooting 40% from behind the arc.

But the 27-year-old’s teams have only made the playoffs three times over his eight-year career, and he has also struggled to stay healthy over the past four seasons, in which he only played more than 50 games once.

In 29 games last season, Towns averaged his lowest point total since his rookie year, scoring 20.8 points per game on just under 50 percent shooting from the floor.
