A Kansas boy was shot dead in broad daylight while playing in a front yard — and authorities are now searching for his killers.
The young boy, whose name has not been released, was fatally struck at around 6 p.m. Wednesday in Kansas City, the Kansas City Police Department (KCKPD) said in a statement.
Although it is not clear how many times the victim was shot, Major Violeta Magee told The Kansas City Star there were multiple casings found at the scene.
Eyewitness and video surveillance evidence is also being investigated, the outlet said.
It is not known whether the incident was targeted or random.
Shortly before noon on Thursday, KCKPD officials announced that authorities had located the maroon 2000s model Subaru Legacy wanted in connection with the shooting.
“We ask for the community’s support as we continue to search for suspects,” the statement read.
The juvenile’s tragic death marked the city’s seventh homicide this year, The Star said.
“It’s heartbreaking. We don’t want to see anybody get shot. Especially not a younger child,” Magee told the outlet.
